An LJ friend (and I'll give credit if it is so desired, but the entry was f-locked so for now yeh...) was looking for shows wherein the central characters are women of color, and I promised I'd dig up some stuff for hir that I figured I'd post in the interest of some other muckraking comrades on my flist, hai?
So I was waffling on to this friend about this interview wherein the incomparable Margaret Cho tells of starring in the
first American TV series wherein an Asian family comprises the central cast (
All-American Girl back in the 90s, who here remembers?! :D), and how almost two decades later with her new show, she lays claim to the
second series to break this ground, and what an ultimately sad indicator that is of contemporary mass media:
"Our entertainment industry is very close-minded... the way that we are racist now is not through outright racism or ethnic slurs or something like that -- it really is about non-inclusion and invisibility."
Anyway, you can find the
interview here. FourFour is one of the few non-LJ blogs I read; Rich is a stellar writer that makes me LOL IRL with every post, and I think his stuff would appeal to many here, so lemme know what you think?
Margaret Cho was indeed the first Asian-American star I ever saw on TV.
Star, as opposed to extra/supporting role.
I could be wrong, but is she not the
only Asian-American actress to star in her own TV series here in the US?
(
A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila doesn't really count in my mind, but this is up for argument, sure.)
I'd mistakenly thought that there was some other Disney Channel teenager to hold this lonely honor, but no, further investigation yields that
it was a movie, not a syndicated show. Anyhoo, I haven't seen either. Plz to be edumacatin' me, comrades!
No disrespect to the lovely Joss Whedon fans on my beloved flist, and don't get me wrong -- I ADORE Buffy the Vampire Slayer-- but Whedon's claims how Homecoming Warrior is a ripoff of BtVS strike me as a bit rich, considering I could name about a dozen Japanese anime titles about nubile, demon-slaying girls that predate Buffy. Make no mistake, Whedon is NOT a plagiarist in my mind -- it's just that the whole "Chosen One" act doesn't particularly strike me as something that one should covet as one's own.
Don't get me started on the race!fail of Cowboy Bebop Firefly either. *cough*From the YouTube comment section, font of all that is good and pure and infallibly wise on these Intarwebz:
margaret Cho is the WORST example of asian americans. She is the WORST role model for asian americans to follow. This woman is a far -left wing political activist who occasionally does "comedy"(i use the term lightly). Lesbian. Promiscuous. Multiple abortions. Drugs. High school drop out. Fat. Ugly. Not very funny. Margaret Cho's got it all!!
Aww. LOVE. ✌
Whoa...should've
posted this clip on Mother's Day :(
